There are benefits to both, and if you have the skill and the time, you can save a lot of money by doing the work yourself, but not everyone is willing to take on such a daunting task. Take some time in making your decision, looking at the benefits of a contractor, and the benefits of doing the work yourself, and then decide what you want to do.
